The abundance and availability of fresh, local foods is one of the best parts of summer. Today we visited Finke’s Pick Your Own Berry Farm just south of Duluth near Carlton, MN.
Harvesting your own strawberries allows you to pick them at the peak of ripeness. The helpers said we could “sample” a strawberry or two as we picked. The one I tasted was bursting with flavor.
The one (or two or three or four) that Finley sampled was bursting with juice, as evidenced by the bright red deliciousness running down her face.
Once we got back to the car, the kids were free to eat to their stomaches’ content as the farm does not use any pesticides.
On the drive back to Duluth, we dreamed of what we could do with our bounty: strawberry jam, strawberries and ice cream, strawberry scones, strawberry and spinach salad (my idea)…
Visiting and supporting local farms is a fun family activity. Be sure to call ahead or visit their website for hours of operation. Some days they are closed due to weather and other days they get “picked out” early. They have buckets to borrow for picking and boxes to buy for transporting your berries home.
