Do your kids love summer swimming? Island Lake, which is just 20 minutes or so north of Duluth, offers a public sand beach.
Finley and I explored Island Lake Park recently.
Here’s what we found:
• Ample parking
• Nearby biffy-like toilets
• Big picnic tables on well-maintained grass
• A paved path to the lake
• Long sand beach
• Roped off swimming area (no life-guard)
• Lots of summer fun!
What’s more, Island Lake Park is quite easy to locate.
Here are the directions (7180 Rice Lake Road, Duluth, MN 55803).
Take Rice Lake Road north. Once you reach Island Lake, you’ll cross a small causeway and pass Island Lake Inn on your left. Just beyond this point when the road curves, the public beach will be on your right. There is a large parking lot. At the corner of the parking lot is a paved path that descends to the public beach. There are biffy-like toilets near the pavilion.
Bonus: We stopped at Boondocks Drive-In, just south of the beach area on Rice Lake Road, for a treat on our way home.
It was a perfect summer outing.
