I smile when I think that someday, Daley and Finley will be out in the world and their answer to the question, “So, where are you from?,” will be, “Duluth.” I’ve written before why it is the best town ever to raise an outdoor kid. My list keeps getting longer. Here is another reason.
The City of Duluth makes it easy for families to get outside and do good together by offering a variety of volunteer opportunities. For example, Daley and I helped “raise the roses” in the Rose Garden to get them ready after the long winter.
Most recently, Finley helped plant flowers in huge pots that will adorn Canal Park and downtown this summer. Finley (and I) even makes a cameo appearance on the Fox 21 News report on beautifying Duluth.
For us, volunteering with the city helps build a sense of community and a sense of belonging to something bigger than our family and everyday routine.
How do we find out about outdoor volunteer activities with the city?
It’s easy. I signed up for email alerts from the Park and Recreation Department. When a volunteer opportunity arises, I get an email notification like this one.
Here are the steps:
1. Sign-up for free email notifications at the City of Duluth website. The page looks like this:
2. Select the type of information you would like to receive. The list is long as there is so much going on with the city. Scroll down and look for the “Parks and Recreation” heading and check the “Parks and Recreation Volunteer Opportunities” box. It looks like this (don’t forget to click the save button).
That’s it! It’s easy-peasy, as the kids like to say.
The volunteer events are well-organized and you get to meet new people.
And it makes Duluth a great place to call home.
Thank you, City of Duluth, for helping our family get Outside In Duluth!
What ways does your family volunteer in the community? Would love to hear your experiences in the comment box below. Thanks!
