Want an outdoor adventure with your kids when the winds gust from 20 to 40 mph in Duluth? Take a drive up Highway 61 to Stoney Point and watch some spectacular surfing on Lake Superior.
The kids and I recently did just that.
The winds were howling, the waves were crashing, and the surfers were having a ball. In this video, you’ll see the thrill it brings Daley when the surfers catch a wave.
We brought hot cocoa since the temperature was in the mid-30s. Daley even offered a mug to one of the surfers along the shore to help keep him warm. Finley reported she was going to offer him ½ of a mini-marshmallow but was easily convinced to give him a whole one.
As I have written before, there are so many reasons we love Duluth, especially the fact that people embrace the wide weather fluctuations. It’s nice for the kids to see that being active can happen in all different types of weather.
On the next windy day, check out the SToNeY PoiNT surf spot Facebook page. To get to their hangout, go north on Highway 61 about 15 or so miles to Stoney Point Drive, which will be on your right.
If time is short, you can also watch surfing at the mouth of the Lester River.
Either way, your kids will enjoy it.
