Like many families, we have an overflowing dress-up box.
Like most kids, ours love to become tigers, dogs, fairies, and construction workers.
But when it is time to head out the door to run errands or go on an outing, we say, “Take your costumes off, please.”
They ask, “Why?”
We answer, “Because you’ll get it dirty.”
But does it really matter?
And why do we only wear costumes outdoors once a year at Halloween?
Last year after Halloween, we took our little forest fairies on a hike.
It was magical.
Donning another identity fostered their imagination as they hid among the trees, flew around the meadow, and got into wooded mischief.
Wearing a costume brings children joy. Wearing a costume outdoors makes them downright giddy.
Life’s too short. Unleash their inner tiger and inner black bird all year long!
