Recently, we decided at the last minute to go camping.
At 5:03 p.m., we left our house.
By 5:13 p.m., we were at our campsite.
We went camping at the new Bagley Nature Area campground on the UMD campus. The campground has 6 sites in a large open field, each with a picnic table. There is a shared fire ring, water spigot with potable water, and a nearby biffy.
It was a low-stress, low-stakes way to introduce camping to Finley ( 4 years old) and reintroduce it to me –– it’s been two decades.
What is the advantage of camping in the middle of town? At 6:45 p.m., we realized we hadn’t packed s’more-making materials. A trip to the Mt. Royal Supermarket and back took less than 8 minutes.
As for the sleeping experience, the kids weren’t bothered at all by the traffic noise, the air-conditioning condenser from the nearby apartments, or the lights from the street.
I will never forget hearing Finley in the tent singing, “I’m so excited! I’m so excited!”
I called out, “Why?”
She responded with elation, “I’m caaamping!”
She was indeed a happy camper.
And it only took us 10 minutes to get home after breaking camp the next morning.
