Did you know that salamanders breathe through their skin? Did you know that a Barred Owl sounds like it is saying, “Who cooks for you?”
I didn’t — until I took Finley to Nature Nook, a weekly drop-in outdoors engagement program for preschool-aged children and their caregivers at Hartley Nature Center.
The 90-minute program starts with Teacher Joy reading a nature-themed book followed by a craft project based on the story.
Finally, everyone goes outside together to explore Hartley’s beautiful park. Led by Joy, we’ve looked for salamanders under logs, caught insects in the tall grass, and examined tadpoles from the pond. Along the way, Joy shared kid-focused nature knowledge.
It’s easy. You just show up. And you learn just as much as your child does.
